What Is Cognitive Function Development Therapy?

An applied neuroscience approach that builds cognitive resources through targeted, interactive activities.

In short

Cognitive Function Development Therapy (CFDT) is a non-invasive therapy that aims to improve cognitive function and bring regulation to the autonomic nervous system. Therapists use interactive activities, competitive or collaborative, that target specific neural networks. CFDT is used with children ages 6 and up and with adults.

How it works

How CFDT works

01

Assess

Objective assessments of primary cognitive functions show each client’s strengths and weaker areas.

02

Target

Sessions focus on the weaker functions to build cognitive resources.

03

Engage

Dynamic, interactive activities drive targeted change. The therapist adjusts in real time.

04

Re-assess

Progress assessments measure change and shape the rest of the plan.

Focus areas

What CFDT works on

Attention and focus

Working memory and memory accuracy

Logical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making

Emotional regulation and stress management

The model

The four pillars of CFDT

01

Discernible thinking

A person’s thinking makes sense given their information and environment, even when their behavior looks irrational to others.

02

Desired neuroplasticity

In a therapeutic setting, the nervous system can change toward a more desirable state.

03

Achieved homeostasis

Dysregulation comes from a large gap between a person’s perceived inner and outer worlds. Picture someone leaning hard into a fast river current, compared with someone standing calmly on the shore. The goal is the shore.

04

Cognitive modification

Building enough cognitive resources can shift the whole system so it self-corrects, much as the body heals with rest, nutrition and support.

Who it's for

Who CFDT helps

Who CFDT is used with

CFDT was designed for people living with nervous system dysregulation. It is used with:

Who is a good fit

CFDT does not replace medical care. A medical or psychiatric evaluation may be needed first.
